My name is Aaron, and just a few months ago I moved from my beautiful hometown of Halifax, N.S., to join the Ecojustice team in Toronto.
It was a big life change, but an easy decision to make. Thanks to the generous support of people like you, Ecojustice is uniquely positioned to drive social and environmental change through the courts. For a young environmental lawyer like myself, that’s the dream.
Around the world, the right to a healthy environment has gained recognition faster than any other human right in the last 50 years. But Canada’s laws haven’t caught up.
My holiday wish is for Canada to enshrine our right to a healthy environment in law.
Imagine that the air you breathe makes you sick or that your children can’t drink the water that comes out of your kitchen faucet. How would you feel if you knew your family was in danger of being displaced by climate change? These are hard realities people in Canada face every day, and some communities are hurting more than others.
Environmental harm disproportionately affects remote, poor communities — particularly those of colour — while affluent communities reap the benefits. This is wrong. The quality of your environment should not be determined by the colour of your skin, how much money you make, or where you live.
At Ecojustice, we’re encouraged to think big and find innovative ways use the power of the law to protect people and the planet. That’s why we’re committed to leading the fight for our right to a healthy environment — in the legislature and the courts.
We’re in it for the long haul, but we can’t do it alone. We need your help.
